“You're coming up on Hartington, a limestone village with a duck pond beside its old market square. I'd stop at the cheese shop by the pond for Hartington Stilton or another local cheese to take away.”

Hiking Hartington – The Dales of the River Dove Walk

Into Beresford DaleThis 5.5-mile (8.

This 5.5-mile (8.8 km) loop starts and finishes in Hartington, with around three hours of walking through Beresford, Wolfscote and Biggin dales. From the village bus stop, follow Mill Lane south, then take the signed path beyond the farm shop and toilets into fields and Morson Wood. A clear woodland path brings the River Dove alongside. At Pike Pool, cross the footbridge; a tall limestone column stands just downstream. Continue through Beresford beside the river, cross again and follow fields toward Wolfscote Dale.

In Wolfscote, the river runs between steep limestone sides and the path stays close to its banks. Follow the valley for about 1.2 miles to a three-pointed signpost and turn left for Biggin Dale. The narrower dale has an uneven limestone floor that can be slippery after rain. Walk about 1.2 miles to the wall at its far end, then turn left toward Hartington. Pike Pool’s footbridge is a good place to pause and look along the river; Wolfscote gives the walk its most enclosed stretch.

About 150 metres after turning left at the wall, take the left fork uphill on the blue-arrow bridleway. This begins the main climb out of the dale. Follow the path between stone walls, crossing field gates and several stiles to a crossroads; continue straight to Reynards Lane. Follow the lanes back into Hartington, taking Hall Bank down toward the village. The return feels more open than the wooded river sections, with countryside views as the trail leaves the dales.

Effort and accessAllow around three hours, plus stops.

Allow around three hours, plus stops. The distance, repeated gates, uneven limestone and uphill return make this a moderate walk rather than an easy riverside stroll. High water can affect the River Dove paths, and wet limestone is slippery. Dogs should be kept on a short lead. A public car park is on Mill Lane; toilets, cafés, pubs and shops are in Hartington close to the start and finish.
