“You're coming up on Hartington, a limestone village with a duck pond beside its old market square. I'd stop at the cheese shop by the pond for Hartington Stilton or another local cheese to take away.”

Hiking Hartington to Pilsbury Castle

The walkThis 5.5-mile out-and-back begins at Parsons Field Car Park in Hartington.

This 5.5-mile out-and-back begins at Parsons Field Car Park in Hartington. It crosses the village past the duck pond and doctors’ surgery, then follows a gated farm track along the upper Dove valley to Pilsbury Castle. Allow about three hours. At the earthworks, turn back and retrace the same corridor; the stated distance includes the return to the car park.

UnderfootThe village approach uses paved streets.

The village approach uses paved streets. Beyond it, expect a lane and farm track, with a rougher, grassy approach near the castle. The route is simple to follow, but it is not a paved promenade all the way. The walk takes you about 2.7 miles out and the same way back; ground conditions vary.

Pilsbury Castle is an 11th-century Norman motte-and-bailey earthwork, not a standing castle building. Its mound sits above the Dove valley, with open views across surrounding farmland and toward the Dragon’s Back on a clear day. Turn around at the earthworks; continuing through Crowdecote or returning by Sheen Road would make a different hike.
