Guide
Chaparral is a small developed picnic clearing beside Pinnacles' west-side parking area. It makes a practical meal or rest stop before or after the Balconies Cave Loop or Juniper Canyon Trail Loop; rock formations are visible from the paved day-use area.
The adjacent lot has 43 spaces, including one marked accessible space, and can fill early on busy weekends, holidays and spring days. Picnicking has no extra fee or reservation, but park admission still applies. There are no restaurants or grocery stores in the park; its small store is at the campground on the east side, and no road connects the two entrances. From Soledad, Highway 146 to the west entrance narrows to one lane. Leashed pets are allowed in developed picnic areas, but may not be left tied or unattended.
The pinnacles visible from the clearing began as part of a volcanic field that erupted about 23 million years ago near present-day Lancaster. Movement along the San Andreas Fault split and carried this section north on the Pacific Plate; water and wind erosion shaped the jagged formations visitors see today.
