Safety

The shoreline route passes below bluffs. High tide or hazardous surf can trap hikers; use a tide low enough for safe passage and avoid the south rocky points except at low or outgoing tide. The creek may flow across the beach in winter and spring.

Hiking Sculptured Beach via Laguna and Santa Maria Beach

What this hike coversFrom Laguna Trailhead, this out-and-back follows Laguna and Fire Lane trails to Coast Camp,…

From Laguna Trailhead, this out-and-back follows Laguna and Fire Lane trails to Coast Camp, then drops to Santa Maria Beach and continues southeast along the water to Sculptured Beach. The listed total is 6.6 miles round trip; the written leg mileages add to less, so plan around the full figure. Allow three to four hours, plus any time spent on the beach. The moderate climb is manageable for many hikers, but the tide-dependent shoreline sets the schedule.

Ridge first, then Coast CampThe southern Laguna Trail climbs steadily for 0.

The southern Laguna Trail climbs steadily for 0.8 mile to a 400-foot ridge crest, where Drakes Bay opens below the grassland. The path is narrow, moderately steep, and rutted in places, so watch your footing rather than expecting a smooth park road. Fire Lane descends about a mile to the Coast Trail just north of Coast Camp; turn toward the campground and its Santa Maria Beach access. Toilets and potable water are available at camp, a useful stop before the shore.

The tide decides the beach legA 600-foot dirt path descends from Coast Camp to Santa Maria Beach.

A 600-foot dirt path descends from Coast Camp to Santa Maria Beach. From the sand, the access can be hard to spot; use the hitching rails, lone eucalyptus, and creek as landmarks. The creek may run across the beach in winter and spring. From the access, walk about 0.8 mile southeast along the water to reach Sculptured Beach. The payoff is a rocky shoreline with the sculptured outcrops and intertidal life exposed at very low tide. High tide or hazardous surf can trap people against the bluffs, and the southern rocky points are for low or outgoing tide only. The ridge and rock shelves are the route’s best photo stops; leave the tide pools undisturbed.

Start, parking, and rulesStart at Laguna Trailhead off Laguna Road.

Start at Laguna Trailhead off Laguna Road. Its paved lot holds about 13 vehicles, with overflow in the grassy field beside the road. Pets are prohibited on these trails and at Sculptured Beach. Do not use the old Sculptured Beach Trail spur; it was decommissioned after storm damage. If you prefer to skip the ridge climb, a separate Limantour Beach start is listed at 5.4 miles round trip, but it trades the inland trails for a longer walk on sand and keeps the same tide constraint.
