Forest Canyon Overlook

Forest Canyon Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Trail Ridge Road at 11,716 feet. A five-minute walk down a paved asphalt path takes you from the parking area to the overlook above Forest Canyon, its tributary canyons, Hayden Gorge and Gorge Lakes. Keep it on your drive if you want a sweeping high-country view without signing up for a hike; the walk is brief, but you are standing well above treeline.

Walk down to the overlook for the full panorama; you can see alpine tundra from the parking area, but the short path opens the view across the canyon. Low tundra plants or foreground boulders help show the scale of the valley, with the Continental Divide peaks beyond it.

A glacier about 1,500 feet thick ground this valley from a V-shaped stream valley into the broad U shape below. During the last major glaciation, ice from Forest Canyon and nearby drainages flowed together and melted in what is now Moraine Park. The broad valley you see from the railing is the work of that ice, not just a steep mountain stream.

The alpine tundra along Trail Ridge has roughly 200 species of tiny plants, but its growing season can last only about 40 days. Look among the rocky patches for pikas and marmots; visitors often mention marmots here, though wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

At 11,716 feet, the air is thin, and this exposed stop is often windy and 20–30°F colder than Estes Park or Grand Lake. Take the short walk at an easy pace and expect weather to change quickly. Parking is provided; food service and restrooms are not listed for the overlook, and formal accessibility details were not found. Trail Ridge Road typically closes from mid-October to Memorial Day, and snow or ice can affect it outside that pattern too, so check current road status before driving up.
