“Near Loftus, the tram line into the park began as a railway branch. Train services stopped in nineteen ninety-one after signal failures. The Sydney Tramway Museum took it over and rebuilt it for heritage trams.”

Beside Loftus Station, just outside Royal National Park’s northern boundary, this volunteer-run museum pairs a tram display hall and restoration work with operating heritage cars. It’s a worthwhile stop if you’re interested in Sydney’s transport history or want a ride toward the park; allow about two to three hours.

The trams run on a museum schedule, and the park-bound departures are limited. Check the current service calendar and last return before planning a walk from the park terminus. Loftus railway station is beside the entrance. On traffic days, parking inside the museum is closed; nearby spaces are on Pitt Street and Rawson Avenue. Most of the site is accessible, but the century-old cars have access limits; an accessible platform and staff assistance are available.

One line runs about a kilometre toward Sutherland; the other travels about two kilometres into Royal National Park over a former railway branch. From the park terminus, walks continue on foot toward Bungoona Lookout, about a kilometre away, and Audley, about two. Museum admission includes rides on both lines.

The park branch opened in 1886 and carried rail passengers until 1991. The museum converted it to tramway standards, and tram service began in 1993. The museum society dates to 1955; after an earlier site opened beside the park in 1965, the current Loftus site opened in 1988.

The collection covers Sydney trams from 1896 to 1952, with cars from San Francisco, Nagasaki, Berlin, Munich and Milan. Look for tram 29, restored to its 1899 George Street appearance, the unique 1909 prison tram, and Sydney’s last remaining double-deck trolleybus. A former Railway Square tram waiting shed was reassembled here, and an 1880s sandstone YMCA facade from central Sydney was moved to the museum in 2001.

The collection and tram ride are the draw; the shed can feel cramped, and some exhibit labels are basic. There’s a kiosk with light refreshments, a book and souvenir shop, a picnic area with electric barbecues, and a public toilet.
