Hiking Quilter Trail

A full-day out-and-backQuilter Trail is a demanding out-and-back from Loma Alta Trailhead into the Rincon Mountain…

Quilter Trail is a demanding out-and-back from Loma Alta Trailhead into the Rincon Mountain District wilderness. The hike follows Hope Camp Trail for about 2.5 miles to the Quilter junction, then climbs along Quilter to its junction with Manning Camp Trail before returning the same way. The published segment distances total about 14.6 miles round trip. The mapped corridor is about 6.7 miles one way, while a recorded outing measured roughly 16 miles round trip even though it turned back just short of the junction. Distance measurements do not line up exactly, so use 14.6 miles as the baseline and leave room for a long day. Allow about 8–10 hours for the rough, rolling route and stops.

Hope Camp and the old ranch countryThe first section follows broad, uneven ranch roads across the lower desert.

The first section follows broad, uneven ranch roads across the lower desert. It passes Deer Camp and Hope Camp, former cattle-gathering places, before reaching the branch onto Quilter. An old windmill has been noted along this approach, though its present condition is not confirmed. A shorter outing turns around at the Quilter junction for about 5 miles round trip and still reaches the historic camps.

Climbing into the RinconsQuilter leaves the lower approach and rises into the foothills on a rough, rocky path.

Quilter leaves the lower approach and rises into the foothills on a rough, rocky path. The climb is not a summit scramble, but the route has enough uneven footing and repeated uphill sections to make the distance count. At the end, the route reaches a mid-elevation wilderness junction with Manning Camp Trail; that junction is the turnaround, not a peak or a developed destination. Continuing past it takes you onto a different route.

Desert views and wildlifeAs the path gains height, views open toward the Rincon Mountains, including the broad slopes…

As the path gains height, views open toward the Rincon Mountains, including the broad slopes around Tanque Verde Peak and Mica Mountain. Frame the saguaro-lined trail against the ridgeline for a sense of how the walk climbs out of the valley. Fall or winter rains can bring Mexican gold poppies to the desert; the area is also home to Gila monsters, desert tortoises, and snakes, so give wildlife room and stay on the trail.

Access, water, and heatThe access is Loma Alta Trailhead at the end of Camino Loma Alta.

The access is Loma Alta Trailhead at the end of Camino Loma Alta. Passenger cars continue to the small road-end lot; horse trailers use a lower parking area beyond the pavement. The last half-mile of road is rocky and unpaved, and the limited car spaces often fill on weekends. A park entrance pass is required for hikers aged 16 and older entering on foot. Pets are not allowed on this route. There is no dependable water supply on this long walk: carry what you need and treat any seasonal natural water. Lower sections can be dangerously hot in summer, while winter storms can bring snow at elevation.
