Sequoia National Park, CA
A foothill connector to Hospital Rock’s pictographs and mortars.
Overview
Potwisha–Hospital Rock Trail is a foothill out-and-back connecting the Potwisha area with Hospital Rock. The mapped path is about 2.3 miles one way; retracing it makes roughly 4.6 miles. One published hiking estimate gives 5.2 miles round trip and about 1,000 feet of climbing, so allow around 2.5–3 hours. It is a moderate, rolling walk with no loop. The payoff is Hospital Rock’s cultural site, not a sequoia grove. Dogs are not allowed on park trails.

Potwisha and Marble Falls“You're approaching Potwisha, where a long foothills hike leads to Marble Falls spilling over pale marble in a narrow canyon. Allow about four hours for the round trip, with steep, uneven stretches and little shade.”

Trail guide
The Potwisha end is by Potwisha Campground off Generals Highway, but dedicated day-use parking directions for this connector are not clear. Verify where to leave your car before setting out. The last park trail-condition entry I found, dated March 27, 2026, described the path as overgrown and difficult to follow. That may have changed, so check current passability with the park. The foothills can be very hot with little shade, and poison oak is common.
Pictographs and bedrock mortars make Hospital Rock a worthwhile cultural stop. The pictographs’ meaning is not known; local tribal members describe them as a record of people who lived here and a reminder of the place’s continuing importance. Water, grills, and flush toilets are available at the picnic area, not along the trail. A separate short path reaches the Middle Fork Kaweah; its slippery rocks and swift, cold water are dangerous, especially during spring high water.
