Doyles River Overlook is a roadside viewpoint at mile 81.9, set at 2,875 feet and facing south across Browns Cove toward Little Flat Mountain and Cedar Mountain. Stop for one clear view with a place-specific story; skip it if you have already had your fill of overlooks.
Keep Browns Cove in the frame with Little Flat and Cedar mountains beyond; that foreground-to-ridge layering is what makes this scene specific. The view faces south, so hold the valley and the ridges together instead of cropping down to an isolated summit.
Browns Cove takes its name from the Brown family, long-time residents of the area. Benjamin Brown acquired nearly 6,000 acres around Doyles River between 1747 and 1760. The family's historic farm, Mount Fair, still stands, with its main house, slave quarters and two cemeteries. That history gives the landscape a human story as well as a scenic one.
