Hiking Big Run Loop Trail

The loop in briefThis 5.

This 5.8-mile loop starts at Doyles River Parking, crosses Skyline Drive to Big Run Overlook, descends to Big Run, then climbs back to the ridge and returns north on the Appalachian Trail. Allow about 3 to 3.5 hours for roughly 1,400 feet of climbing. It suits hikers comfortable with a steep descent, a rocky stream crossing and a sustained climb; most of the route is wooded, with the clearest open view late in the loop.

Park in the Doyles River lot near Skyline Drive milepost 81, then cross the road to Big Run Overlook on the west side. The overlook has room for only a car or two. Follow the blue blazes down toward the valley. This is the short marked loop; the longer Big Run Portal camping itineraries add mileage and are a different outing.

Down to Big Run and back upThe first 2.2 miles drop about 1,500 feet.

The first 2.2 miles drop about 1,500 feet. At the bottom, the route reaches Big Run, where the documented crossing is a rock hop. Just beyond it, take the left fork at the concrete post onto yellow blazes. The trail climbs about 1,000 feet over a little more than a mile, the hardest sustained stretch. At the next post around mile 3.5, turn left and east onto blue blazes; the grade eases but continues uphill. Rocks and roots can be hard to see under fallen leaves.

The Appalachian Trail returnAround mile 4.2, turn north on the Appalachian Trail.

Around mile 4.2, turn north on the Appalachian Trail. The route crosses Skyline Drive near mile 4.5 and reaches Doyles River Overlook around mile 4.7, the loop's clearest view across the ridges and valley. It is a good place to frame the layered mountains beyond the foreground trees. The trail passes granite cliffs, then continues about another mile to a concrete post; turn left there for the short return to the Doyles River parking area.
