Doyles River Cabin is a primitive, one-room rental in Shenandoah’s South District, built in 1936 by artisans and members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. It sleeps up to 12 and is locked between guest stays, so you need an advance reservation through the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. It’s an overnight destination, not an open shelter or a museum stop; give the cabin privacy if guests are staying there.

Plan for the hike inWhen Skyline Drive is open, the cabin is a half-mile hike in.

When Skyline Drive is open, the cabin is a half-mile hike in. If the drive is closed, the alternate approach is 4.3 miles, a route meant for experienced backpackers. A short distance can still mean a lot of carrying when you bring food and overnight gear, so check the road status before you plan the stay.

Inside the single room are two sets of bunks and two wider bunk sets, plus a dining area and wood stove. Outside, there’s a covered porch, an outdoor fireplace and a picnic table. Expect a primitive stay without electricity or indoor plumbing. For the park’s PATC cabins generally, a pit toilet and spring are nearby; check with the club about the setup here and how to treat the water. Plan meals before the hike in.

The covered porch looks toward Cedar Mountain and Via Gap, giving the stay a proper mountain setting. For a photo, include the porch posts with Cedar Mountain and Via Gap beyond them; it shows both the cabin and its setting.
