Trail guide
This 29-mile, four-day backpacking loop starts and ends at Doyles River Parking near mile 81. It links the Jones Run and Doyles River waterfalls, a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, Frazier Discovery Trail, Patterson Ridge, Big Run Portal, Rocky Mountain Trail, Brown Mountain and Big Run Loop. The park rates the itinerary for experienced hikers; its third day is a strenuous 9-mile day hike. Allow about 20 hours of hiking time across the four days as a planning estimate, since no official total hiking time is published and campsites shift the daily distances.
From the parking area, the first day drops to the Appalachian Trail and turns south for about 3.4 miles before branching onto Jones Run Trail. Follow the stream about 2.5 miles to its junction with Doyles River and find a legal backcountry site below the confluence. The second day climbs Doyles River Trail to the Appalachian Trail, then heads north to the one side of Frazier Discovery Trail used by this trip. After crossing Skyline Drive, a short grassy connector reaches Patterson Ridge. Follow it about 3.1 miles to Big Run Portal and choose a legal site in the next mile; the actual campsite changes where the day's walking ends.
On day three, leave camp on Rocky Mountain Trail, called Rocky Mountain Run in the printed itinerary, and climb about 2.7 miles to Brown Mountain Trail. Turn west for about 4.6 miles, then descend to Big Run Portal and return to camp, roughly 1.5 miles farther. Day four follows Big Run Portal upstream about 2.5 miles, depending on the campsite, then turns onto Big Run Loop South for about 2.2 miles to Big Run Overlook. Cross Skyline Drive to the shared parking area. The printed daily figures add to 29.2 miles because they are rounded; the headline itinerary total is 29 miles.
Jones Run Falls is marked at 42 feet. The Doyles River section passes Upper Doyles River Falls at 28 feet and Lower Doyles River Falls at 63 feet. On the Appalachian Trail near Loft Mountain, the route opens to east-facing views; the north side of Frazier has an outstanding west-facing view from a rocky ledge. Big Run Overlook faces northwest across the valley, although summer growth often obscures its view. The overlook image is a possible view, not a guarantee of clear sightlines.
Big Run is the park's largest watershed and supports brook trout. Expect many stream crossings along Jones Run, Doyles River and Big Run Portal. In spring or after heavy rain, crossings can rise to knee or waist depth; do not attempt them during flooding or icy conditions. Filter or treat stream water before drinking. The park map describes Frazier Discovery as steep in sections, and the full route adds long rocky mountain miles to those crossings.
Overnight camping requires a backcountry permit booked through Recreation.gov, as well as a valid park entrance pass or fee. Use the current camping-zone map and rules to choose legal sites: the printed itinerary's camp suggestions are dated and the exact sites are not fixed. Pets are prohibited on Frazier Discovery Trail, so dogs cannot accompany the full loop. Loft Mountain Wayside is a separate optional meal stop near Frazier, not a wilderness trail amenity; check current hours before relying on it.
For a waterfall outing instead of the four-day circuit, the park map lists Jones Run Falls as a 3.2-mile round trip and Doyles River Falls as a 3.3-mile round trip. Those are separate short hikes from their own access points, not alternate names for this backpacking loop.
