Overview
Jones Run Falls is a 42-foot waterfall on a forested mountain stream in Shenandoah’s South District. It’s a good pick if you want a real waterfall hike rather than a roadside stop. The National Park Service’s out-and-back is 3.2 miles round trip, about two and a half hours, with 1,045 feet of elevation gain and one stream crossing. It’s rated moderate, and the climb back to Skyline Drive is the part to budget energy for.

Guide
Start at Jones Run Parking Area on Skyline Drive at mile 84.1. Cross the drive to the trailhead, cross the Appalachian Trail, and follow the blue-blazed Jones Run Trail down through the forest toward the stream. The falls are the destination; return the same way. The descent is a pleasant way in, but every foot you drop has to be climbed again on the way out.
Jones Run spills over a broad, layered rock face into a boulder-lined creek beneath the trees. The 42-foot drop is more of a stepped cascade than a single plunge. For a photo, include some of the rocks at its base; they give the falling water a sense of scale. Flow changes with conditions, and visitors have found it reduced to a trickle after dry spells, so the waterfall can look quite different from one visit to another.
This is a hike, not a pull-off view. Bring water and a snack for the walk, and check Skyline Drive conditions before setting out. The trail does not meet ADA accessibility guidelines. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet. A park entrance fee applies; the hike itself has no separate activity fee.
