Doyles River Falls

Doyles River Falls is a pair of cascades, Upper and Lower, on the blue-blazed Doyles River Trail in Shenandoah’s South District. The National Park Service describes a 3.3-mile round trip, about 2 hours 15 minutes, with 1,189 feet of elevation gain. The walk descends toward the waterfalls, so the hardest climbing comes on the way back up.

Begin at Doyles River Parking Area on Skyline Drive at mile 81.1. Follow the blue blazes, cross the Appalachian Trail, then follow the posted turns to both falls and retrace your route. A waterfall map pin marks the on-foot destination, not the road access point. Expect a stream crossing; the trail does not meet ADA accessibility guidelines. Dogs are allowed on a physical leash no longer than six feet. The route is listed as year-round, but severe weather can close Skyline Drive, so check current park conditions before setting out.

Trail posts identify Upper and Lower Falls. The trail leaves the forested approach for a stretch beside the river, with short rocky descents to the falls. Lower Falls is the taller drop, spreading across several dark ledges. That layered rock makes a good frame; include the cascades below the main drop to show how the water steps through the hollow.

Water volume changes with rainfall. After dry weather the falls may be little more than a trickle; spring or a stretch of rain can bring stronger flow. The stream crossing can also be higher when the water is up.

A side trail leads to Doyles River Cabin before the falls. The Civilian Conservation Corps built it in 1936; it is now a primitive hike-in cabin with a wood stove, bunks, dining area and a porch facing Cedar Mountain. It is a separate rustic overnight stop, not a public shelter at the waterfalls.
