Fishers Gap Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive at mile 49.4, looking northwest through a narrow opening toward the Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain. It is a quick stop with more to notice than the view at first glance: the small notch in the ridge is New Market Gap, a Civil War landmark. This is not the open sweep shown in old photographs; the park notes that views from 1937 were much clearer than they are today.
On May 15, 1864, Union troops fought Confederate forces for control of the agricultural Shenandoah Valley. The Confederates won, in what the park describes as their last victory in the valley. New Market Gap marks the battle site, giving this narrow view a clear point of reference.
Look for the notch in Massanutten Mountain, then keep enough of the ridge and valley in the frame to show where it sits. The notch is small, so a tight shot can lose the landmark that makes this overlook distinctive.
