Rose River Falls

Rose River Falls is a 67-foot waterfall in Shenandoah's wooded wilderness, reached on the Rose River Loop. It's a half-day outing, not a roadside stop: the National Park Service describes a 4-mile circuit with 910 feet of climbing and an estimated 4½ hours. Go for a long stream walk with a proper waterfall payoff. The route is rated moderate, though rocky footing and the climb back make it feel like a real hike.

Begin at Fishers Gap on Skyline Drive, mile 49.4. Cross the road and head down the fire road; after the chain, turn onto the yellow-blazed Skyland-Big Meadows Horse Trail, then join the blue-blazed Rose River Loop Trail about 0.6 mile later. The official circuit passes the falls, crosses a bridge and climbs a steep, rocky stretch beside the cascades before returning to the fire road and climbing about a mile back to Skyline Drive. The park entrance fee applies; there is no separate activity fee.

The main falls drop over rock into a plunge pool. For the close basin view, expect a rocky scramble from the main tread, and take extra care if the rocks are wet. The trail does not meet ADA accessibility guidelines. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet.

Rose River and Hog Camp Branch wind through a shaded stream corridor with smaller cascades, slides and plunge pools along the way. Visitors often single out the continuous water scenery as much as the main drop. For a photo, look for a shaded cascade along the trail; patches of direct sun through the canopy can make stream scenes harder to balance.

At the bridge and fire-road junction, the NPS route offers an optional detour of about a quarter-mile more hiking to the base of Dark Hollow Falls and back. It is a separate waterfall, so count it as an extra stop on an already substantial loop.

The fire-road route also passes Cave Cemetery, a small family burial ground. It is one of more than 100 cemeteries associated with families who lived within today's park boundaries in the 1930s and 1940s, a reminder that this forested ridge was home before it became a national park.
