Overview
Rose River Falls delivers a classic Shenandoah waterfall day: a 67-foot veil over mossy rock, clear pools you can wade in, and a shaded, ferny forest that feels worlds away. Much of the route crosses federally designated wilderness, so it stays blissfully undeveloped even though it’s popular.
The Hike
Most people do the Rose River Loop (about 4 miles and ~900 feet of gain) from Fishers Gap Overlook on Skyline Drive (mile 49.4). Park, cross the road, and follow signs; the first stretch shares the Skyland–Big Meadows Horse Trail. You’ll reach the falls roughly 1.3–1.4 miles from the drive, then climb back toward Skyline Drive on a steady grade. Expect dirt and gravel underfoot, roots, and some rocky, muddy patches—especially after rain.

It’s waterfall-after-waterfall, not just one payoff. On hot days, the basin below the main falls is a brisk cool-down. Dog owners also love that leashed pets are allowed.
