Overview

Skyland Stables is Shenandoah’s classic horseback-riding outpost, tucked in the Skyland area around mile 42.5 on Skyline Drive. Rides head out with a guide, briefly cross Skyline Drive, and meander by the Limberlost area and an old apple orchard. It’s a slower, more immersive way to take in the forest, especially if you’re not up for a big hike.

What it's like

Expect an easygoing, one-hour guided ride on wooded trails with bits of park history woven in. The route highlights Limberlost’s gentle terrain and those orchard remnants from the pre-park era. It’s calm, scenic, and built for beginners and casual riders. For little ones, the stables also offer pony rides.

Why it’s unique

Very few places in the park let you experience the Blue Ridge from the saddle. Skyland Stables delivers that perspective without requiring riding experience, and it’s right next to the amenities of the Skyland area. It’s a standout family-friendly activity that doesn’t require a long day on foot.

Wildlife

Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and plenty of songbirds along the forested stretches. Black bears are possible but never guaranteed—think of wildlife sightings as a bonus rather than a promise.

Logistics

Operations are run by the park concessioner and are seasonal and weather-dependent. Rides are offered throughout the day when conditions allow, and they often fill during peak months—advance reservations are smart.
