Massanutten Lodge

Massanutten Lodge is a historic house museum at Skyland, along Skyline Drive. Built in 1911 as Addie Nairn Hunter's cottage, it now pairs a refurnished living room with an exhibit about women who visited the resort in the 1920s. It suits visitors curious about the people and buildings behind Skyland's resort history more than anyone looking for a walk or a big view.

Visits are seasonal and tied to ranger programs, generally from late spring through autumn. Check the current program schedule before planning around an interior visit; it isn't a daily walk-in stop. Parking is available around the Skyland complex. Bags, food, drinks, and photography aren't allowed inside.

The living room is furnished to evoke how Addie lived around 1915. Look for the piano, bird cage, card table, books, and music player among the period details. A separate exhibit follows several women who came to Skyland in the 1920s and the barriers they worked to move beyond.

Addie Nairn Hunter bought a small Skyland lot from resort founder George Freeman Pollock in 1910 and chose architect Victor E. Mindeleff for the cottage. Construction began the next spring; she married Pollock later in 1911. The lodge's name points to the Massanutten Range visible to the west.

Mindeleff designed the house for a steep slope. Its projecting wooden balcony rises on massive stone supports, with timber and bark-clad sections above. From outside, frame the balcony with the stone piers beneath it to show how the building meets the hillside. Addie also planted trees and laid out a flower garden around the house; the stonework and balcony remain the clearest details to notice.
