Indian Run Overlook

Indian Run Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive at mile 10.8, about 2,400 feet up. It looks east over the hill and hollow shaped by Indian Run toward the Piedmont. Keep it for a quick view stop; if you're choosing only a few overlooks, this is a straightforward pull-off rather than a hike or a separate outing. Skyline Drive's mileposts start at Front Royal and increase south, so use mile 10.8 to find it. Shenandoah requires an entrance pass.

The stream slowly eroded the hill in front of the overlook, leaving the hollow that gives Indian Run its name. Beyond it, the view opens across the Piedmont. Compton Gap is to the north and Jenkins Gap to the south, which gives you a useful sense of where you are along this stretch of the ridge.

Thick basalt flows at the overlook contain columnar joints: long fractures that divide cooled lava into column-like shapes. It's a good detail to keep in mind while you're looking across the ridges; the view is built from both stream-cut slopes and volcanic bedrock.

The east-facing view works well at sunrise. Frame the hill in front with the layered ridges beyond it. Fog can hide the far view, so this is a stop to enjoy when the horizon is clear rather than a guaranteed panorama.
