Jenkins Gap Overlook

Overview

A quick pull-off around mile 12 on Skyline Drive, Jenkins Gap Overlook delivers a peaceful, east-facing “window” into Virginia’s Piedmont. At 2,355 feet, it’s not the most dramatic panorama in the park, but the framed, V-shaped view can be gorgeous in the right light—and the vibe is usually calm.

What You’ll See

Expect a focused, V-shaped opening between ridges with long looks toward the Piedmont and into the hollow below (formed by Bolton Branch). It’s an intimate scene rather than a 180-degree sweep—great for sunrise color and low-angle light.

A Bit of History

The name honors the many Jenkins families who once lived here before the park’s creation—sixteen families held about 850 acres in this area. It’s a stop that nods to human history as much as scenery.

Trails From Here

This pullout doubles as practical access for hikers. You can hop on the Jenkins Gap Trail and connect to the Appalachian Trail for longer rambles. Note that the Jenkins Gap Trail can be brushy with occasional blowdowns—expect a more rugged feel than the marquee routes.

Wildlife & Birding

Keep an eye out for deer, wild turkeys, and small mammals along the forest edge. Birders may spot raptors and migrants in spring and fall; bring binoculars if that’s your thing. Black bears are around the region, though sightings at the overlook itself aren’t frequent.

Planning Notes

• Amenities: none—no restroom, water, or picnic tables. It’s a simple roadside pullout with parking and a scenic stone wall.
• Orientation: the parking area is just north of the overlook along Skyline Drive.
• Weather: fog is common and can completely erase the view; try again when it lifts.

• Time of day: sunrise is the sweet spot for light on this east-facing view; afternoons are often backlit and hazy.
• Day of week: weekdays are reliably quieter; fall color weekends bring more traffic.
• Season: spring and fall offer crisp air for clearer vistas (and better birding).
