Overview

A quick, rewarding stop on Skyline Drive, Old Rag View Overlook frames the park’s most famous peak from afar. Set around milepost 46.5 at roughly 3,585 feet, it faces east-northeast toward Old Rag (about three miles away, summit 3,291 feet). No hike, no permit—just pull over and soak in the scenery.

What You’ll See

You get the full profile of Old Rag’s knobby, granite crown with layered Blue Ridge ridgelines rolling off into the distance. The view lights up at sunrise and turns downright dramatic in October when the hollows blaze with color.

Why This Overlook

Plenty of overlooks are pretty; this one has a purpose. It’s the cleanest drive-up look at Old Rag’s rugged summit—perfect if you’re not doing the strenuous rock-scramble loop or visiting on a day permits are sold out.

Know Before You Go

  • This is not a trailhead—there’s no access to the Old Rag hike from here.
  • It’s a simple paved pull-off meant for short stops; there are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables.
  • Skyline Drive can close for ice, snow, or storms—check road status before you go.

Wildlife

Not a wildlife hotspot, but early and quiet hours sometimes bring deer or soaring raptors in the broader vista. Bring binoculars if you like scanning ridgelines.

Best Time to Visit

  • Sunrise: The overlook faces east-northeast, so first light is prime for photos.
  • Fall: Peak foliage amplifies the view.
  • Weekdays and early mornings: Easier parking and fewer people.
  • Clear days: Old Rag’s distinctive summit pops when haze is low.
