More about Fox Hollow Cemetery

A small stop on a history walkThis small family burial ground sits in a sunny clearing along Fox Hollow Trail near Dickey…

This small family burial ground sits in a sunny clearing along Fox Hollow Trail near Dickey Ridge. Only a few gravestones remain, but it gives you a tangible glimpse of the mountain families who lived here before the park. Take the loop if you like seeing history in the landscape; the cemetery is modest, with the story doing more work than the scenery.

Reach it on footThe cemetery is reached on the 1.2-mile circuit, which climbs 310 feet.

The cemetery is reached on the 1.2-mile circuit, which climbs 310 feet. Start across Skyline Drive from Dickey Ridge Visitor Center at mile 4.6. Go left on Dickey Ridge Trail, then right on Fox Hollow Trail; the loop passes the cemetery before returning to the start. The trail is not ADA accessible, and pets are not allowed; service animals are welcome. Leave the graves, flowers, and stone walls undisturbed because they are protected cultural resources.

Flowers and cherries from the Fox familyGenerations of Foxes are buried here.

Generations of Foxes are buried here. In spring, look for the old-fashioned daffodils and deep purple irises the family planted, along with periwinkle on the ground. They also planted blackheart cherry trees for fruit. In 1976, Lemuel Fox Jr. remembered picking cherries from a cemetery tree while his horse rested during corn plowing. That tree later fell in a storm; the sunny opening is one trace of how the old homestead has changed.
