Hiking Nicholson Hollow Hike to Corbin Cabin

Nicholson Hollow is an 8-mile out-and-back from the Old Rag boundary parking area to Corbin Cabin, following Nicholson Hollow Trail and returning on the same line. Allow 6 to 7 hours. It is a moderately strenuous forest-and-river walk with about 1,240 feet of climbing and several stream crossings. The payoff is a historic riverside homesite, not a summit or a chain of long views. Choose it for the walk through the hollow and its history; the distance and repeated crossings make this a full-day outing.

Follow the river carefullyThe trail starts across the road from the parking area at the concrete Nicholson Hollow marker.

The trail starts across the road from the parking area at the concrete Nicholson Hollow marker. Its early miles follow the Hughes River and smaller streams through a wooded hollow. Expect rocky, rooty footing and repeated crossings of Brokenback Run, Hannah Run and the Hughes River; stepping stones can be slick, and changing water levels affect how easy each crossing is. Around the first major Hughes crossing, near 1.4 miles, check that you stay on Nicholson Hollow Trail: crossing the river there sends hikers onto Corbin Mountain Trail instead. The walk climbs more noticeably in roughly its last 1.5 miles toward the cabin, then you retrace that same corridor.

Corbin Cabin sits beside the Hughes River, with a few wooden steps down to the bank. The log building and nearby stone walls are reminders of the farm that once occupied the hollow. This is a quiet river stop rather than a panoramic viewpoint. For a photo, include the river with the cabin so the setting is part of the frame. The cabin is maintained as a rentable historic cabin, not a visitor center or a guaranteed day-hiker facility.

The hollow was settled in the late 1700s, and the Corbin family lived here from at least the 1880s. George T. Corbin built the cabin around 1910 as the center of a small farm, with animal pens, henhouses and stone fences. The family was evicted in 1938 when the park was created. The cabin survived the park's creation and later fires; the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club took it over and renovated it in 1954. The walls and other farm traces make the destination more than a cabin at the end of a long walk.
