Upper Whiteoak Falls

Upper Whiteoak Falls is a waterfall destination in Whiteoak Canyon, reached on foot from Skyline Drive. The hike ends at a rocky ledge with a view of the falls, and the stream and smaller cascades make the walk worthwhile before you get there. Choose it when you want a proper canyon hike; it takes too long for a quick stop from the car.

Start at Whiteoak Canyon parking area, mile 42.6 on Skyline Drive. The upper-falls out-and-back is 4.6 miles round trip with 1,040 feet of elevation gain, about three and a half hours of hiking. The ledge is roughly 2.3 miles in; turn around there and return the way you came. It’s rated moderate, but that much climbing makes it a substantial outing. Longer mileage totals for Whiteoak Canyon may include other falls or trail combinations, so check the endpoints before comparing routes.

The walk passes the Old Rag Fire Road and Limberlost junctions before reaching the upper falls. Along the way, the stream threads between large boulders, smaller cascades, and steep canyon walls. Leave time to look around as you go; the canyon gives you more than one payoff.

The view is from a rocky ledge, not a built overlook. For photos, keep some of the dark rock wall around the whitewater; that shows the canyon setting better than a tight crop of the water alone.

Hikes to Whiteoak Canyon’s waterfalls have drawn visitors since the early days of Skyland Resort. The stream and cascades still make this feel like a destination reached on foot, rather than a viewpoint you pull over to see.

The parking area is at mile 42.6 on Skyline Drive. Park entry fees apply and no separate reservation is required. The trail isn’t ADA accessible. Pets are allowed on this hike on a leash no longer than six feet. Treat the lot as a trailhead rather than a food stop; restrooms and drinking water there weren’t confirmed, so fill bottles before setting out.
