Maria Hope Trail

Maria Hope Trail is a 0.8-mile one-way point-to-point hike from Centerline Road down the wooded slope to North Shore Road above Maho Bay. It follows a historic road and earns its place with an overlook toward Maho and Francis bays, with Tortola beyond. The upper drop is steep before the grade eases.

Allow about 35 to 45 minutes one way. If you have one car, walking back makes this a 1.6-mile outing and usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. It suits someone after a short shaded hike and a big view; skip it if you need a loop or an easy stroll.

The path drops sharply below Centerline Road, then continues through dense tropical forest. Expect rough, uneven footing. A usually dry creek crosses about a tenth of a mile before the lower road, where the trail turns sharply right to North Shore Road. From there, a short walk right leads toward Maho Bay; the road the other way continues toward America Hill and Cinnamon Bay, a different hike.

The overlook opens toward Maho Bay and Francis Bay, with Tortola beyond. Keep some palm fronds and ridgeline in your photo so the narrow opening to the sea reads in context. Maho Bay Beach is a separate stop beyond the lower exit, with restrooms at the beach rather than on the trail.

This is a section of the old Maria Hope Road, part of Konge Vey, or King's Road, a historic cross-island route. Near Centerline, low stone walls recall an old horse corral and road retaining wall. Estate Hope ruins are on a separate branch; longer southern variants have private-land concerns, so stay on the mapped corridor.

A few roadside spaces serve the Centerline Road and North Shore ends, both near blind bends with fast traffic. Use designated pullouts and plan your return before starting; without a ride, retrace the route uphill. Dogs are allowed on the trail on a leash no longer than six feet. The rocky path can be slick after rain, so this short walk is less casual than its mileage suggests.
