More about Fairy Cove

A small cove off the headlandFairy Cove is a small, sheltered beach on the Darby River–Tongue Point coastal walk.

Fairy Cove is a small, sheltered beach on the Darby River–Tongue Point coastal walk. Pale sand is hemmed in by rounded, weathered granite boulders, with clear shallows and tide pools between the rocks. The cove is a worthwhile detour if you want time beside the water as part of a longer coastal walk; it is not a roadside beach. Near the narrowing end of Tongue Point, its enclosed shoreline feels different from the open headland above. At lower tides the exposed pools and rock ledges give you more to look around, while the little pocket of sand makes a natural place to pause before climbing back to the main track.

Getting down to the sandStart at Darby River car park and follow the signed Tongue Point route. About 2.

Start at Darby River car park and follow the signed Tongue Point route. About 2.4 km into the walk, a side track drops roughly 400 m to the beach. Treat those distances as estimates; allow for the climb back up the same slope before continuing toward Tongue Point or retracing your steps. The approach climbs Darby Hill, an ancient sand dune, then crosses a saddle where sandy ground gives way to coastal heath and weathered granite stacks. On the way, look back over Darby Swamp toward Vereker Range; farther along, the narrowing headland opens views across Bass Strait. You can return by the same route or arrange a car shuffle to finish at Darby Saddle.

At high tide the beach can become very narrow or inaccessible; check tide times if reaching the sand is important to your walk. From the shore, the rounded boulders make a strong frame for pale pools and clear water, with the opposite headland beyond. The cove is unpatrolled, and park advice lists rough surf, slippery rocks, uneven ground and drop-offs as hazards. Swimming and snorkeling are at your own risk. There is no mobile reception in the area, and dogs are not allowed on the walk.
