More about Tongue Point

Why make the walkTongue Point is a rocky coastal headland reached on the Darby River walk on the west side of…

Tongue Point is a rocky coastal headland reached on the Darby River walk on the west side of Wilsons Promontory. Its weathered granite tors, boulder-strewn shore and open coastal views are the payoff. This is a substantial hike rather than a quick viewpoint: from Darby River Carpark, the route is 3.8 km one way and takes about two hours each way. It is Grade 4, with steep, uneven sections, so allow at least half a day for the return walk and a stop at the headland. It suits walkers after a long coastal outing; skip it if a hard, rough track is not your idea of a good stop.

From the south end of Darby River Carpark, the trail climbs an ancient sand dune, opening views over the winding river toward the Vereker Range, then follows the coastal headland to the granite outcrops. Look for the weathered tors and boulders at the end. The marked track stops before the semi-detached island; stay on the mainland and do not cross. A short side path drops steeply to Fairy Cove. At low tide, a natural rock pool can appear among its boulders, but reaching it means taking a separate, steep detour.

Other ways inFrom Darby Saddle, the longer approach is 5.

From Darby Saddle, the longer approach is 5.6 km one way and about two and a half hours, passing Sparkes Lookout and Lookout Rocks before joining the Tongue Point track. Walking all the way between Darby River and Darby Saddle makes a 9.4 km one-way through-route and requires a car shuttle. From the mainland terminus, the pale granite boulders sit against the open sea; keep the island in the background rather than trying to reach it.
