Trail guide
This 8.3-mile loop starts across from White Wolf Lodge, reaches a viewpoint over the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, passes Harden Lake, and returns to White Wolf. Allow about 4–5 hours. The first miles roll through forest and pocket meadows; the hardest part is the steep descent to the canyon and the climb back through Harden Gardens. If you want a shorter outing, the separate 5.8-mile Harden Lake round trip skips the canyon viewpoint.
The trail starts across from the lodge. The opening gravel track follows the Middle Fork of the Tuolumne along part of the former Tioga Road, then the path crosses the river. Just beyond the crossing, take the left branch toward the canyon rather than continuing toward Lukens Lake. The forest trail rises and falls gently past a couple of small meadows for roughly 2.5 miles; then the canyon opens and the route starts down.
A steep descent reaches a broad view into the canyon. Wapama Falls may show as a tiny white mark in the distance, so frame the gorge with the granite and pines in front instead of expecting a close-up of the falls. A faint left branch after about 200 feet of descent can shorten the loop by joining the Harden Lake route; choose it deliberately if you want to miss part of the rim circuit.
The longer loop traverses the hillside, then climbs steep switchbacks through Harden Gardens to Harden Lake. The garden is a named stretch of aspens and flowers. From the lake, continue through the woods and along the road back to White Wolf.
Tioga Road opens seasonally, so the White Wolf trailhead is reachable by car only while that road is open. Services in the area are limited; bring all the food and water you need, since no on-route resupply is confirmed. Dogs aren't allowed on Yosemite's hiking trails. Park near the lodge before entering the campground; the trail starts across the road.
