Overview
Bindalm is a small group of four traditional alpine huts and grazing meadows at about 1,100 m, at the head of Klausbachtal below Hirschbichl Pass on the German-Austrian border. It suits a mountain outing for anyone who wants to reach a real pasture settlement and spend time among the huts and peaks; the approach is the main commitment. From Klausbachhaus, allow about two to two-and-a-half hours on foot. The route is rated moderate, with steeper sections near the end.

Guide
Two of the four huts welcome visitors and serve homemade butter, cheese and drinks. Schüsslkas is the regional specialty made at Bindalm, a traditional cheese found only in southern Berchtesgaden. The grazing area also includes Mittereisalm, where young cattle spend the summer. Check whether the serving huts are open before planning a meal around them.
The pasture and hut roofs sit beneath the jagged peaks of the Reiter Alm. From the meadow, include a hut in the foreground with the peaks behind it; that shows both the working pasture and its mountain setting.
Schied-Kaser is a circular Rundumkaser, a traditional hut type. It stood on Feldalm near Funtensee and remained in use there until 1960. After the pasture was abandoned, the national park dismantled it, moved each piece here by helicopter and rebuilt it. Look for its round form among the other huts.
