“You're nearing the Jennerbahn valley station, where the gondola takes you high above Königssee. I'd choose this on a clear day, when you can enjoy the lake and the Watzmann across it.”

Hiking Königsbachalm via Hochbahn

A steep way to the AlmThis is the 5.1-mile (8.

This is the 5.1-mile (8.2 km) out-and-back from Parkplatz Königssee to Königsbachalm on the Hochbahnweg. Treat the listed 4.1 km as the uphill leg; the Alm is the turnaround, so plan to retrace the route. Expect about 571 m (1,873 ft) of climbing and roughly 3.5 to 4 hours for the full return, with extra time if you stop at the viewpoint or hut. It is a sustained mountain walk: steep in places, but technically straightforward.

From the parking area, pass the Jennerbahn valley station and follow the uphill road into the trees. The Hochbahnweg then climbs above Königssee, with steep sections before it reaches a forest road leading straight to the Alm. This is the Königsbachalm route, not the longer boat-access loop from Kessel or the continuation toward Jenner and other pastures. Mountain bikes also use the Hochbahn, so stay alert where the shared path narrows.

A bench above KönigsseeBenches mark a viewpoint above the lake.

Benches mark a viewpoint above the lake. Through the opening in the trees, look back across Königssee and its boat route; the water and steep opposite shore make a good frame. This hike stays high above the lakeshore, so the viewpoint is the lake experience rather than a walk beside the water.

At the pastureThe route ends among Königsbachalm's wooden huts and grazing cattle.

The route ends among Königsbachalm's wooden huts and grazing cattle. Marmots live in the meadow too; they are called Mankein locally, and some burrow entrances sit just a few metres from the path. The mountain restaurant serves a simple Brotzeit-style meal. Full service is generally seasonal, around May through October, and the hut can close in bad weather. Other alpine routes branch from the Alm, but continuing onward changes the hike; this trail turns back toward the parking area.
