Overview

About Grünstein Summit Viewpoint

Why stop

  • A wide panorama brings Watzmannkar, Watzmann and Königssee into one climb.

Heads up

  • The steep climb and loose, sometimes slippery descent take care.
Grünstein is a 1,304 m summit above Schönau am Königssee, marked by a wooden cross. It is a steep mountain hike rather than a roadside lookout: the marked Hammerstiel return is listed at 5 km and about 2½ hours, with around 500 m of climbing. Take sturdy shoes and consider poles for the loose, sometimes slippery descent. The summit drops sharply on several sides, so stay well back from the edges.
Parkwolf’s verdictIs the climb worth it?

Trail 445 leaves the Hammerstiel parking area on a broad forest track, narrows beside a stream, then climbs in steep switchbacks. It rejoins the hut access road; from Grünsteinhütte, continue another 15–20 minutes to the summit. A separate route from the bobsled and luge track is also described. The via ferrata reaches the top by a distinct climbing route, not the ordinary walking approach.

From the cross, Watzmannkar and the Watzmann’s jagged “children” rise to the south, with Königssee far below; the panorama also reaches across Berchtesgaden valley. The wooden cross carries an INRI inscription. For a photo, keep some of the forested ridge beneath the Watzmann peaks so the mountain’s height reads in the frame.

Grünsteinhütte sits just below the summit and makes a natural food stop before the last climb. Food and refreshments are available there, and Kaiserschmarrn is a standout order; plan for this hut stop rather than expecting services at the summit.
