Jennerbahn

From the valley terminal on Jennerbahnstraße, gondolas carry up to ten people to Halbzeit at 1,200 m and continue to Jenneralm at 1,800 m. Both upper stations open onto hiking routes of varying difficulty, so you can break the ride at Halbzeit or use the mountain station as your starting point. The broad panorama and National Park exhibition are at the top.

The gondola reaches the mountain station below Jenner’s summit. From there, allow about 20 minutes on foot to the summit and its cross. The paths are alpine terrain, and most hiking trails are not cleared in winter. Check current route conditions if the summit walk is your main reason for riding.

The classic Königsblick from Jenner pairs Königssee with the Watzmann massif across the water. Keep some of the lake below the mountains in your photo; it gives the view its scale. Clear weather makes a real difference to this panorama.

The summit station holds the Berchtesgaden National Park’s highest information point. Its permanent “Das ist der Gipfel” exhibit explores the alpine habitat of rock and stone, the plants and animals that live there, and sensitive places such as ruffed-grouse habitat. It spans a lobby by Jenneralm and a second room reached by elevator, with interactive displays about snow hares and marmots. Park staff sometimes set up a spotting scope on a nearby platform to look for bearded vultures and golden eagles.

Halbzeit at the middle station serves mountain dishes including schnitzel and Germknödel, a yeast dumpling; it has about 80 seats indoors and outdoors. At the top, Jenneralm serves Bavarian dishes from a panoramic terrace. Both restaurants and their toilets are described as barrier-free. Jenneralm has a playground, and a playground is also in view from Halbzeit.

Jennerbahn began operating in 1953, connecting Schönau with the mountain. Today’s ten-person gondolas keep that high-alpine outing within reach without climbing all the way up from the valley.

The valley station is on Jennerbahnstraße 18 in Schönau am Königssee. The cableway and stations are described as largely accessible, with ramps and elevators; wheelchairs, strollers, child carriers and walking aids can go in the gondolas. Mountain trails have their own terrain limits, so check the exact route if accessibility matters. Operating hours change with the season and maintenance. Check the current timetable and last ride down before you go, especially if you plan to walk.
