“You're coming up on Königssee, where electric boats carry you between steep mountain walls beneath the Watzmann. I'd take the boat to St. Bartholomä for the red-domed church and a wander along the shore.”

Malerwinkel is a named lookout on the north shore of Königssee, known for its long view down the lake. From the landing stage, turn left past the boathouses and follow the wide path uphill to the viewpoint; benches give you a place to pause. It is a short out-and-back climb, separate from the full Malerwinkel loop.

The view and the echoLook along the lake toward St.

Look along the lake toward St. Bartholomä’s pilgrimage church and the pointed Schönfeldspitze beyond it. Boat crews play a flugelhorn to demonstrate Königssee’s echo, which can also be heard from the elevated lookout. For a photo that shows the distance, include the church with the lake and mountain walls.

If you want a longer walkThe Malerwinkl circular route continues through mixed mountain forest toward the Jennerbahn…

The Malerwinkl circular route continues through mixed mountain forest toward the Jennerbahn valley station, then returns to the Königssee car park. The full loop is 5 km, with about 160 m of ascent, and takes roughly 90 minutes; those figures are for the loop, not the viewpoint spur. Two broad switchbacks make up much of the climb.

Stay on the visitor routeDo not follow the narrow old path that continues along the shore beyond Malerwinkel.

Do not follow the narrow old path that continues along the shore beyond Malerwinkel. It has fallen into disrepair and is a serious fall risk. Return by the wide path or take the circular route through the forest.

Glaciers carved the valley around Königssee. The lake is about 7.7 km long, up to 1.7 km wide and reaches 190 m deep, with steep mountain flanks rising beside the water. From Malerwinkel, that narrow shape draws the view toward St. Bartholomä and the peaks beyond it.
