“You're coming up on Königssee, where electric boats carry you between steep mountain walls beneath the Watzmann. I'd take the boat to St. Bartholomä for the red-domed church and a wander along the shore.”

Mitterkaseralm am Jenner is a 5.8-mile (9.3 km) point-to-point climb from Parkplatz Königssee to a mountain inn on Jenner. The published route takes about four hours to the hut, gaining roughly 3,200 feet (979 m) with only about 200 feet of descent along the way. It is a long, steep-in-places mountain climb, so plan for a full uphill outing rather than a quick stop.

From the lot, pass the Jennerbahn valley station and take Hochbahnweg toward Königsbachalm. Conifer forest shades much of the climb, with a brief opening back toward Königssee. Beyond Königsbachalm, follow Königsweg toward the middle station, passing Doppelkaser on Wasserfallalm and Sulzbergkaser before turning right for Mitterkaseralm.

The route ends at a seasonal mountain inn in working alpine pasture below Jenner’s pale limestone ridge. The pasture first served as summer grazing land for the Klauslehen estate in Bischofswiesen. The local nickname “Klaus Maxei” came from Max Resch, who opened the mountain inn in 1955; it was enlarged in 1972. Treat the inn as a possible meal stop, not a sure thing, and check its current opening before relying on it. From the gravel forecourt, the hut and jagged ridge fit in one view.

Plan the returnThe 5.

The 5.8 miles and four-hour estimate cover the one-way hike to the hut; this route does not include a return. Walking back the same way makes about 11.6 miles in total. The hut itinerary also describes continuing uphill to Jennerbahn’s summit station and taking the cable car down; that extra climb is outside this trail’s mapped line. Keep dogs on a lead in the national park and give pasture livestock space.
