Tucked into the Valley of the Waters at Wentworth Falls, Empress Falls is a multi‑tier cascade that drops into a deep, dark-green pool inside a narrow gorge. It’s a photogenic, moody spot where rainforest, mossy walls, and spray all conspire to keep things cool and atmospheric.

The Walk
From the Conservation Hut, the track dives quickly into the valley via long runs of stone steps and a few ladder sections. Expect sustained stairs, wet patches from waterfall spray, and sections that can feel airy in places. It’s a straightforward descent, but the return climb is where you’ll earn your views.
Canyoning Scene
This is the finale of Empress Canyon. Guided groups move down the creek and finish by abseiling right down Empress Falls itself. Even if you’re not clipping in, watching people rappel through the curtain of water adds a shot of adrenaline to the setting. If you’re keen, book a licensed tour that provides instruction and gear.
Swimming
There’s a natural pool at the base that’s irresistible on a hot day. It’s bracingly cold year‑round, so bring your nerve (and a towel) if you plan to dip.
Amenities & Logistics
There are no facilities at the falls. Use parking, toilets, and the café at the Conservation Hut trailhead before you descend. The car park can fill fast on busy days. Dogs aren’t permitted on the track.
Best Time to Visit
Early mornings on weekdays are the sweet spot for fewer people and softer light. Weekends see a mid‑day to mid‑afternoon crush, especially when canyoning groups are active. The falls look their best after rain, but that’s when the track is slickest—take extra care.
