Overview

A quiet, geology-forward stop at Milepost 8.8, Greenstone Overlook sits atop Catoctin Greenstone and pairs a small but striking valley view with a short interpretive loop. It’s an easy place to stretch your legs and learn what gives these rocks their deep greenish-blue tint.

What You’ll See

The vista looks into the valley below, including the southern end of the Lyndhurst area and the village of Stewart’s Draft, with Big Levels off to the left. It’s not the Parkway’s widest panorama, but the combination of rock outcrops and forest setting gives it a distinctive feel.

The Greenstone Trail

From the pullout, a self-guided loop (about 0.2 miles; roughly a 20-minute wander if you linger) winds among boulders and through oak–hickory forest. Expect uneven, rocky footing in spots and occasional slanted rock faces.

Why It’s Unique

Greenstone Overlook highlights Catoctin Greenstone—ancient lava flows that define much of the Parkway’s first 19 miles. Interpretive signs help you connect the view to the geology underfoot, making this a smarter stop than your average overlook.

Wildlife & Seasonal Notes

The surrounding forest hosts birds, small mammals, and deer; black bears are possible. In warm months, snakes (including rattlesnakes) are active—watch your step and give wildlife space.

Practicalities

There are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables here. Parking is limited and can fill during peak travel hours. Plan this as a brief stop to enjoy the view and the loop.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon brings softer light for photos and fewer cars than weekend middays. Any season works; the loop and rock features are interesting year-round, and fall color adds punch to the valley scene.
