Raven's Roost Overlook

Overview

Milepost 10.7 delivers one of the Parkway’s most dramatic roadside viewpoints. Raven’s Roost Overlook looks west across the Shenandoah Valley toward the Alleghenies, with an exposed rocky promontory and a gnarled, iconic tree that has become the postcard shot for this stretch of road.

Why it’s special

This is the sunset stop up here: wide-open horizons, layered ridgelines, and that unmistakable tree for foreground interest. It’s also a favorite spot for proposals, tiny weddings, and photo sessions because the views require zero hiking—step out of the car and you’re there.

What you’ll see

• Big, 180-degree vistas over the valley and distant peaks, with golden-hour light pouring in from the west.
• The famous dead/windswept tree perched on the rock outcrop—perfect for silhouettes.
• On occasion, you may spot climbers or hang gliders using the cliffs below.

Wildlife

Keep an eye on the sky—ravens, turkey vultures, and hawks often ride the thermals here. Deer show up at dawn or dusk, but this spot is more about birds and big views than critter watching.

Know before you go

It’s exposed and often windy, so bring a layer even on warm days. There are no facilities—no water, no restrooms—so plan your pit stops elsewhere and pack out all trash. The rock ledge has steep drop-offs; watch your footing and keep kids and pets close.

Best time to visit

• Sunset is the money hour for color and silhouettes; arrive 30–60 minutes early on weekends and clear evenings to snag parking and a good perch.
• For solitude and soft light, come at sunrise or on weekdays.
• Clear, post-storm evenings can deliver especially crisp views.
