Rockside Station

Rockside Station is the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad’s Cleveland-area boarding point, in Independence, Ohio. It’s the railroad station closest to Cleveland and a good place to start if a train ride is part of your visit. This is a working boarding station, so plan around a scheduled excursion rather than treating it like an all-day visitor center.

Check the railroad’s calendar before you go; dates and departures vary by ride. The station has a large parking area beside the platform. From here, a separate pedestrian crossing heads east toward Lock 39 Trailhead, where you can reach the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and the Cuyahoga River Water Trail.

The long, pale yellow, wood-sided platform has a shingled roof, benches, and a small central office. Step inside while you wait: interpretive panels connect the valley’s rail line to Cleveland industry and coal mining farther south.

Planning for the Valley Railway began in the 1850s, but delays pushed its opening to 1880. The route linked Akron and the southern coalfields with Cleveland’s lake port, carrying coal and other farm and industrial goods north. That freight story is the useful backdrop for the exhibits at Rockside.

The yellow boarding station visitors use today was built by the National Park Service in the early 2000s. It isn’t Thornburg Station, a different depot that once served Independence nearby. The names can blur together, but the current Rockside platform is the CVSR boarding stop.
