Overview

About Chatauqua Peak

Why stop

  • Rewarding summit scramble with expansive valley views

Heads up

  • Exposed boulders and cliff edges make the top demanding
Chatauqua Peak is a compact summit walk from Halls Gap with a more hands-on finish than the area's roadside lookouts. The reward is a rugged, rocky top with broad views over the Halls Gap Valley and the Wonderland Range. The final boulder field and low scrub make the summit feel like an actual climb, even though it works well as a half-day outing.

What the walk is likeStart from the recreation oval in Halls Gap and follow the marked track uphill.

Start from the recreation oval in Halls Gap and follow the marked track uphill. The route builds gradually through bushland, with plenty of steps before the last section turns rough and rocky. Allow a couple of hours for the return outing, more if you take your time or include Clematis Falls on the way back. The falls are most worthwhile after rain, while the summit is the main reason to choose this walk over an easier valley stroll.

This is a popular walk, so an early start or a weekday gives you a better chance of a quieter climb and cooler conditions. Clear mornings usually offer the cleanest distant views; late-day light can be lovely on the rock, but leave enough time to descend safely. Bring water, sun protection, and shoes with a firm grip. There are no services on the summit, so sort out food and drinks before leaving Halls Gap.

Know before you goThe last boulders are a genuine scramble, not a level lookout.

The last boulders are a genuine scramble, not a level lookout. Official warnings include a steep track, unstable cliffs, and slippery rocks. Take care around exposed edges, keep children close, and turn around before the summit if the scrambling or exposure is beyond your comfort level. Dogs are not allowed on the walk.
