Plan your hike

Before you go

Parking

Park at or walk from Halls Gap Recreation Reserve and follow the path around the rear of the oval.

Best time to go

  • Clematis Falls is seasonal and is usually much more rewarding after rain. In dry spells the flow can be a trickle or absent.
  • For photography, early morning or late afternoon suits the shaded gully and damp rock. Overcast days after rain give even light on the falls and avoid harsh contrast between forest and sky.

Safety

Seasonal waterfall flow, slippery rocks at the base, steep sections, unstable cliffs, and falling limbs or trees. Dogs are not allowed.

  • A short compacted path leads from the reserve and around the rear of the oval.
  • The track then follows connected rough-ground sections shared with the Chatauqua Peak Walk.
  • The final stretch is the named Clematis Falls Walk segment, which ends close to the falls.

  • Firm and simple near the reserve, then rough natural ground for much of the way.
  • The rocky section at the base of the falls is slippery, especially when wet. Take care on the final approach to the viewing spot.
  • Sections of track are steep, and the surrounding cliffs are unstable. Stay on the formed route and avoid lingering directly beneath rock faces.
  • Falling limbs and trees are a standing risk in tall forest. Stay alert and keep clear of overhanging dead branches.

The route runs through tall open forest sheltered beneath sandstone cliffs, a cool and shaded corridor for most of the way. Native understorey plants line the track, and spring wildflowers are the main seasonal reward. Visitors sometimes notice kangaroos, wallabies, emus, lizards and a good range of birds, though nothing is guaranteed.

Access and rulesStart from the Halls Gap Recreation Reserve and follow the path around the rear of the oval.

  • Dogs are not allowed on this route. Assistance animals are covered by the park's separate rules.
  • The short distance and gentle overall grade make it suitable for families, keeping in mind the rough ground and slippery rock near the falls.

The Chatauqua Peak Loop shares the early track and continues as a longer, steeper mountain outing with more sustained climbing and summit views. Treat it as a separate, harder walk rather than an extension of this one.
