From Halls Gap the track follows Stony Creek upstream past Venus Baths and into the Grand Canyon, with stone staircases, footbridges and boulders, then climbs to The Pinnacle for the panoramic view over Fyans Valley and out toward the Mount William Range. From there the route continues through the northern Serra Range to Bugiga Hike-in Campground. Lake View Lookout makes a sensible breather along the way. Walkers who have done it describe the last pull up to The Pinnacle as genuinely tough with a loaded pack, so plan the day around that rather than the kilometre count.

The second morning starts with a steep, demanding climb toward Mount Rosea, then traverses tall wet sclerophyll forest, rocky outcrops and the dramatic Rosea cliff country, with Sundial Peak and the heritage-protected raised water fluming on its dry-stone pillars along the way. The day finishes with a long descent on steep, winding steps down to Borough Huts Campground. Hikers report yellow route arrows through the rockier sections help keep you on line.

  • Elevation samples along the route climb from roughly 250 m at Halls Gap to around 700 m in the Pinnacle area, drop and regain height through the Serra Range, reach about 930 m in the Mount Rosea section, then fall away to about 310 m at the finish. Expect repeated climbing and descending, not one climb and one drop.
  • Footing is mixed: creekside stone steps, footbridges, boulders, exposed rock slabs and outcrops, and long stepped descents. Solid boots and careful foot placement matter, especially when rock is wet.
  • Rocky, open sections mean real exposure to sun and wind above the valley.
Camping, water and permitsOvernight camping at Bugiga must be booked in advance and camping fees apply.
  • Overnight camping at Bugiga must be booked in advance and camping fees apply.
  • Campground water tanks are untreated. Carry a filter, purification tablets or the means to boil, and carry enough water for the walking sections between camps.
  • Fuel stoves are allowed in hiker camps. Open campfires are not.
  • Hikers describe Bugiga as a restful dedicated hiker camp with toilets and tank water.

  • The walk begins in Halls Gap and finishes at Borough Huts Campground, so you need a vehicle shuffle back to Halls Gap or a licensed transfer. Sort this out before you start walking.
  • Brambuk, The National Park and Cultural Centre is the official information point for this hike.
  • Pets are not permitted. Dogs and other pets are generally not allowed in Victorian national parks, and assistance dogs have separate entry requirements.
Honest drawbacksThe distance is not the hard part.

The distance is not the hard part. The combination of steep climbing, rough rock underfoot, an overnight pack and a stepped descent at the end of day two is what makes this walk demanding. There is no water you can drink straight from a tap, no campfire at camp, and no way to avoid the transport logistics at either end. If you are not comfortable on rocky, steep ground with a heavy pack, this is not the overnighter to learn on.
