Overview

About Splitters Falls

Why stop

  • Intimate forest setting with layered rock and ferns
  • Easy to pair with Venus Baths and Wonderland walks

Heads up

  • Flow can shrink to a trickle in dry weather
  • Uneven, slippery footing and steps make it more than a casual stroll
Splitters Falls is a small, seasonal cascade tucked into the wooded Wonderland area near Halls Gap. After good rain, water threads over dark, layered rock shelves into the creek below, with ferns, moss and native bush close around the falls. It feels intimate and sheltered rather than grand, making it a pleasant close-up waterfall stop and a good contrast to the open lookouts nearby.

Before you go

Best time to visit

Go after recent rain for the best chance of a worthwhile cascade, or in spring when wildflowers add colour to the walk. For photographs, bright overcast or soft morning light keeps detail in the white water and wet rock; late afternoon can add warmth once the falls are in shade. If the forecast has been dry, pair Splitters Falls with Venus Baths or the Wonderland scenery so the outing still works even if the waterfall is quiet.

More about Splitters Falls

The walkStart at Wonderland Carpark and follow the signed walking track to the falls.

Start at Wonderland Carpark and follow the signed walking track to the falls. You can also approach from Halls Gap via Stony Creek and Venus Baths, but that route adds more walking and stairs. Treat the visit as a moderate bushwalk, not a roadside viewpoint: the track includes uneven ground, rocky sections and steps, and can become slippery after rain. The surrounding Wonderland walks make it easy to combine this stop with a longer outing.

What to expectThe waterfall is strongly dependent on rainfall.

The waterfall is strongly dependent on rainfall. In wetter months it can be flowing beautifully; in dry weather it may shrink to a trickle, so set expectations accordingly. Repeated visitor reports describe a quiet, rewarding setting, but also mention steep or slippery footing and occasional waits for a clear photo on busy weekends. Look for birds and lizards along the creek and keep an eye out for the wider park's kangaroos and wallabies without expecting a guaranteed sighting.

Plan the stopThere is free parking at Wonderland Carpark and a nearby pit toilet.

There is free parking at Wonderland Carpark and a nearby pit toilet. Bring water, sturdy shoes and a light rain layer, especially when the rocks are wet. Dogs, camping, fires, bicycles and fishing are not permitted on this walk. Stay on the track, avoid wet rock and respect the official warnings about slippery surfaces, shallow water, drop-offs, unstable cliffs and falling limbs.
