Boronia Peak: A Quieter Summit

Overview

About Boronia Peak

Why stop

  • Wide views reward a relatively short half-day climb

Heads up

  • The final rocks are exposed and require a short scramble
Boronia Peak is a worthwhile half-day walk for a high, open look over Halls Gap, Lake Fyans, and the ridges of Gariwerd. The reward is the change in scale: after a steady forest climb, the track finishes on bare sandstone with views in every direction. It feels like a real summit rather than a roadside lookout.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Start early in warm weather: the climb gets hot, and the exposed summit has little shelter. Cooler months are more comfortable for the uphill work. Weekday mornings are the best bet for a quieter walk. The route is often less busy than the park's headline walks, but the small rocky top can still feel tight on a fine weekend. After rain, the rock can be slippery, so take extra care on the final scramble.

“You're nearing Tandara Road, the access for the Boronia Peak walk. This is a good choice if you'd enjoy a quieter summit outing than the better-known Wonderland hikes.”

More about Boronia Peak

Walk it smartThe standard walk from the Tandara Road car park is about 6.

The standard walk from the Tandara Road car park is about 6.6 km return and usually takes 2 to 3 hours. It crosses the Fyans Creek footbridge, then climbs through tall messmate forest and native pines. The last 50 metres are steeper and rocky, with a short scramble to reach the high point. Wear shoes with good grip and keep both hands free for the final section.

You can also start farther south near Brambuk and join the track via the Fyans Creek approach. That adds distance and makes the outing longer, but it is a useful option if you want a gentler creekside beginning. The trail is well marked; still carry water and snacks because the peak itself is not a service stop.

The creek flats and surrounding woodland are good places to stay alert for eastern grey kangaroos, emus, wallabies, and native birds. Sightings are never guaranteed, so scan quietly rather than expecting a wildlife encounter. Keep your distance and do not feed animals.
