Plan your hike

Before you go

Parking

Use the main car park in Halls Gap. The route starts through the pool and botanic gardens; no vehicle shuffle is needed.

Best time to go

Budget around 13 hours of walking across the two days, roughly 6.5 hours per 13 km leg. Each day is a long, demanding hiking day rather than a stroll with a pack, and the profile is not one clean climb: sampled elevations along the corridor run from about 238 m up to about 801 m, with repeated climbing and descending in both directions. This is a hard walk suited to fit, experienced hikers carrying overnight gear.

Safety

Grade 4 terrain with steep, uneven and exposed rocky sections, long days and a Mount Difficult Road crossing. Werdug is hike-in only; campground water is untreated and open fires are prohibited.

An out-and-back overnight: 13 km in to Werdug Hike-in Campground, then the same 13 km back out the next day, for 26 km return using the official visitor distance. Start and finish are both at Halls Gap, so there is no vehicle shuffle to organise. Parks Victoria rates it Grade 4, and that is fair.

How the day unfoldsOn the return you pass Lake Wartook Lookout at 829 m before dropping through lower vegetation…

On the return you pass Lake Wartook Lookout at 829 m before dropping through lower vegetation into wetter eastern-slope forest of Messmate and Brown Stringybark, with ferns, grasses, wattles and tea trees. Expect birdlife, and wildflowers in season.

  • Easy start from the main Halls Gap car park, past the pool and botanic gardens, with tall eucalypt forest early on
  • Climbing toward Clematis Falls and Chatauqua Peak, then a steep transition into the dry rocky escarpments of the Mount Difficult Range
  • Exposed rocky tread with broad views, a crossing of Mount Difficult Road, then the final approach to camp
  • Werdug sits on a high knoll looking out toward Lake Wartook and the western Mount Difficult Range, which is the payoff for the day

Steep, uneven rocky ground is the norm once you leave the forest, and escarpment sections are open to wind and sun with little shade. Watch your footing on the rock, allow extra time if you are slower on descents, and take care crossing Mount Difficult Road.

  • Werdug is hike-in only, with no drive-up access
  • Book through Parks Victoria before you go; camping fees apply
  • Facilities are timber tent platforms, basic toilets, and a water collection point
  • The water at the collection point is untreated and must be treated before drinking; carry a treatment method and enough capacity for a long day
  • Fuel stoves only, no open fires
  • No dogs on the trail or at the campground (assistance-dog entry is handled separately), and no bikes, horses, motorbikes, generators, vehicles, firearms, or drones without a permit

Winter, spring and the days after rain are the best window across the broader northern Grampians Peaks Trail, when seasonal waterfalls and rock pools are running. Treat those as seasonal features rather than something you can count on along this route at any time of year. Exposed rock and long days make hot weather the least pleasant option. Camp on the knoll is well placed for late light and early morning views west toward Lake Wartook.

If 26 km with a pack is more than you want, the Wonderland and Pinnacle area near Halls Gap gives you a shorter, more developed day walk with strong views and no booking or overnight logistics.
