Overview

About Grand Canyon

Why stop

  • Towering walls make the gorge feel genuinely immersive
  • A short route delivers creek, cascades and rocky terraces

Heads up

  • Steep, uneven steps make the short distance deceptively demanding
  • Popular mornings can feel busy in the narrow gorge
Grand Canyon is a short, hands-on walk into the Wonderland Range. Layered sandstone walls close around a narrow gorge, where a creek threads past small cascades before the route climbs back out onto open, rocky terraces. In wetter months, a seasonal waterfall adds another reason to make the detour, but the sculpted walls are the main event when the gorge is dry.

Best time to go

Water flows most reliably in the wetter months. For a quieter walk and gentler light on the rock, arrive early in the morning; the narrow gorge can feel busy once the Wonderland precinct fills. Late afternoon can bring warm colour to the sandstone, but allow enough daylight for the uneven return to the carpark.

The 900 m circuit starts from Wonderland Carpark and is officially described as short but strenuous. Expect uneven ground, rock scrambling and a steep staircase near the end of the gorge that feels more like a ladder than an ordinary set of steps. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, keep your hands free, and take your time on wet rock.

The upper terraces are a good place to pause for wildflowers and wallabies. Dogs are not allowed in the national park. Treat the creek and steep sections seriously after rain, when surfaces can be slippery and water conditions can change.

Practical detailsWonderland Carpark is the natural starting point and has a basic pit toilet nearby.

Wonderland Carpark is the natural starting point and has a basic pit toilet nearby. Facilities are limited, so bring your own drinking water and sturdy footwear. This is an easy stop to pair with other Wonderland walks, including the Pinnacle route, but Grand Canyon is worth doing on its own when you want a compact dose of rugged Gariwerd scenery.

It is a different experience from the Grampians' open lookouts: the walls feel close, the light changes quickly as you move through the cleft, and the walk gives you a real sense of the rock rather than a distant panorama.
