Parking

Wonderland Carpark on Wonderland Road, reached from Halls Gap via Mount Victory Road. Toilets and picnic tables are at the carpark.

Best time to go

  • Flow is most reliable in winter and the falls look best after rain.
  • In dry spells the waterfall can be reduced to a trickle, which is the main honest drawback of this walk.
  • Late winter and spring add wildflowers along the track.

Safety

Steep drops and unstable cliffs border parts of the gorge. Rock around the falls can be extremely slippery when wet. Falling limbs and trees are a hazard. Keep children close. Dogs are not allowed in the national park except assistance dogs.

An out-and-back walk of 2.4 km return (about 1.15 km each way) from Wonderland Carpark to the Turret Falls viewing area, with the distance quoted as the full return trip including the access from the carpark. Allow about 1 hour.

From the carpark, take the signed path away from the Pinnacle group of walks, then climb through sandstone woodland and native scrub and along the gorge. The track reaches the top of the falls, where Stony Creek drops through rockpools, then continues around the gorge to viewpoints from rocky ledges, so you can see the falls both from above and from across the gorge. A short careful scramble can bring you to the water at the base, but that is optional and is not part of the formed track.

Difficulty and footingGrade 3 formed earthen track with steps, short uphill sections and rocky footing.
  • Grade 3 formed earthen track with steps, short uphill sections and rocky footing.
  • Practical difficulty is easy to moderate, rated 4 out of 10.
  • Sections pass close to steep drops with exposed cliff edges near the gorge.
  • Sturdy shoes help on loose and uneven rock.

The falls are small, seasonal and prettily terraced, spilling over sandstone slopes into rockpools. The wider setting is the Wonderland Range, a landscape of very old folded sandstone ridges, with eucalyptus woodland and native scrub along the way. The gorge views from the rocky ledges are as much of the reward as the water itself.

SafetySudden cliff edges and unstable cliffs, so stay back from the rims and keep children close.

  • Rock near the top of the falls can be extremely slippery when wet.
  • Wet rock and slick surfaces around the pools call for slow, deliberate footing.
