Before you go

Parking

Wonderland Car Park off Wonderland Road; follow the signed approach to the Grand Canyon loop.

Best time to go

Spring can be excellent for wildflowers through this part of the park. Wallabies are sometimes about along the way. Whatever the season, plan around the weather rather than the calendar, since dry rock is what makes the steep bits manageable.

Safety

Steep track, slippery rocks, unstable cliffs and flash-flood risk in the gorge. Dogs are not allowed.

Hiking Grand Canyon Loop Walk

The short versionA 900 m loop from Wonderland Car Park, and that figure is the total circuit, not one direction.

A 900 m loop from Wonderland Car Park, and that figure is the total circuit, not one direction. Most people take 30 to 45 minutes. It is short, but it earns its reputation for being steep and physical.

From the car park a short signed approach drops you into the Grand Canyon itself, a narrow gorge walled by tall layered sandstone. A trickling stream threads the rocky floor while you pick your way between formations, then the track climbs out onto rocky terraces before the named Grand Canyon Loop return brings you back along the same short approach to the car park.

This is the compact gorge circuit only. It is not the longer Pinnacle or Wonderland Loop walk.

How hard it really isCall it moderate to strenuous for the distance.

Call it moderate to strenuous for the distance. The surface is natural ground and bare rock with steep steps, ladder-like sections, and scrambling over uneven stone. Sections of the gorge are cramped, so you will be using your hands and watching your feet more than your camera. Sturdy shoes with grip make a real difference.

It is not a smooth path. Wheels and prams cannot use it.

Rock and water hazardsThe rock is slippery, the track is steep, and cliff edges in the area can be unstable.

The rock is slippery, the track is steep, and cliff edges in the area can be unstable. The gorge is also subject to flash flooding, so treat wet weather as a reason to reconsider rather than push on.

Reach Wonderland Car Park from Wonderland Road; the trail proper starts roughly 30 m from the parking area at a signed junction. Ordinary dogs are not allowed anywhere on the walk, with assistance-dog requirements handled separately. Also off the table: camping, fires, horses, bicycles, generators, firearms, fishing, and vehicles.
