Birch Island Campground

If you’re chasing quiet on Isle Royale, Birch Island Campground is about as private as it gets. Tucked near the mouth of McCargoe Cove, it’s a tiny, boat-in hideout with only one shelter and one individual tent site. Expect lake views, big skies, and the kind of stillness you notice.

Setting and Wildlife

You’re ringed by Lake Superior’s rocky shoreline and mixed forest. Despite the name, many of the birches are gone or fading, so expect a more mixed woodland. This area is good country for moose, and you might spot beavers, otters, loons, and eagles; wolf sightings are rare but possible.

Access and Logistics

There’s no direct ferry service—arrive by canoe, kayak, or private boat. The dock is shallow (around 5 ft), so large vessels won’t work here. Bring everything you need and pack out what you bring in.

Best Time to Visit

• Season: Summer is prime; shoulder-season weather can be rougher on a small island.
• Time of day: Mornings are your best bet to snag the site or shelter before boaters make the rounds.
• Crowds: Low overall, but with only two spots, arriving early matters.
• Photography: Golden hours light up Superior—sunrise for calm water, sunset for warm rock and sky color.
