Palisade Lookout Trail

From the gated end of Pyramid Lake Road, follow the Pyramid Mountain Fire Road through forest to the Pyramid Mountain fork, then take the Palisade branch to the old lookout site. This is an out-and-back with about 14.1 miles (22.6 km) of total hiking and roughly 800 m of elevation gain. The wide road makes the lower route straightforward, but the day is long, the upper branch is rougher and steeper, and the return descent can be hard on tired knees. Allow about 8 hours and carry plenty of water and food; there is no reliable water source along the route.

The lower fire road is mostly forested, while the upper route opens toward rocky slopes and the former lookout site. From the Palisade, the Athabasca River valley and the surrounding mountain ranges spread out below, making the long climb worthwhile for hikers who want a quieter, big-view day.

Parks Canada lists this as official trail 16a and permits hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The route begins at the gated end of Pyramid Lake Road, follows the Pyramid Mountain Fire Road to its fork, and turns right toward the Palisade lookout. Do not follow the Pyramid Mountain branch unless that is your intended hike.

The upper route is steep, rough, and exposed, and weather can change quickly at the lookout. Bears frequent the Palisades area: carry bear spray, make noise, and know how to respond to wildlife. Bring water, food, layers, sun protection, and sturdy footwear. In winter or during snow conditions, treat this as a backcountry outing and check avalanche information before setting out.
