If you want an easy, scenic loop close to Jasper townsite, this one checks the boxes: calm lakefront walking, Pyramid Mountain views, and shaded forest—all without a big climb. It’s popular, but hit it early or late and you’ll get that glassy-lake look everyone comes for.
This is a 4.8 km / ~3.0 mi TOTAL loop with about 60 m (~200 ft) of gentle gain. Expect a mostly natural dirt path with some roots and bumps, weaving along Patricia Lake’s shore and then through quiet forest on Pyramid Bench. It’s multi‑use, so you may share segments with bikes and, at times, horseback riders. The footing is fine for most hikers, but it’s not stroller-friendly.
On calm mornings, Pyramid Mountain often reflects in the lake—bring a camera or binoculars for the birds. Keep an eye out for mule deer and elk in the woods, and listen for loons out on the water. The lake also has a quirky history: during WWII this was the test site for Project Habbakuk, an experimental ice-and-wood-pulp “pykrete” ship—an odd footnote that adds character to an already photogenic spot.
Reach it via Pyramid Lake Road from Jasper. Look for signage and parking around the Cottonwood Creek parking area; from there it’s simple to hop on the loop.
Late spring through early autumn is prime. May–September gives dry tread, open views, and the best chance at mirror‑calm water. Mornings and evenings beat midday crowds and light is far better. In winter, nearby routes see cross‑country skiing.
This is wildlife country. During berry season, bears may be around—carry bear spray, keep dogs leashed, and make noise in denser sections. Because it’s multi‑use, be ready to yield to bikes and horses. If you want a longer or steeper challenge, there are bigger payoffs elsewhere in the park—but for an unfussy, close‑to‑town lap with classic Jasper scenery, Patricia Lake delivers.
Park at the signed Cottonwood Creek parking area off Pyramid Lake Road; trail access is obvious from there.
Bear activity possible in berry season—carry bear spray and make noise. Multi-use trail: expect bikes and occasional horseback riders; yield appropriately. Uneven, rooty tread.
